Frequently Asked Questions – BAC Calculator
This calculator provides estimates using the Widmark formula, which is widely used but not 100% accurate. BAC can vary based on metabolism, food intake, medications, health conditions, and individual physiology. Always err on the side of caution and never rely solely on calculations to determine if you’re safe to drive.
BAC is affected by: body weight and composition, gender (women typically have higher BAC than men from same amount), time elapsed, food consumption, rate of drinking, medications, health conditions, and individual metabolism rates. Our calculator considers the major factors but individual variation exists.
A standard drink contains about 14 grams (0.6 oz) of pure alcohol: 12 oz beer (5% ABV), 5 oz wine (12% ABV), or 1.5 oz spirits (40% ABV). Mixed drinks may contain multiple standard drinks. Always check alcohol content as it varies significantly between brands and types.
The average person metabolizes alcohol at about 0.015% BAC per hour, roughly one standard drink per hour. However, this varies significantly between individuals. Factors like liver health, age, medications, and genetics affect metabolism rate. You cannot speed up this process with coffee, cold showers, or exercise.
Legal limits vary by country/state: 0.08% in most US states and Canada, 0.05% in Australia and many European countries, 0.02% for drivers under 21 in the US, and 0.00% in some countries. Commercial drivers often have lower limits (0.04%). Always check local laws and remember that impairment can occur below legal limits.
The only safe approach is to wait until your BAC is 0.00%. Even below legal limits, alcohol impairs judgment, reaction time, and coordination. Plan alternative transportation when drinking: designated drivers, rideshare, taxi, or public transport. Never guess – when in doubt, don’t drive.
