The Mortar Joint Rule
Mortar thickness drastically changes the brick count. A standard 10mm mortar joint means each brick takes up 10mm more space in both length and height. Omitting this will cause massive over-ordering.
The Wastage Factor
Bricks shatter during transport, get cut in half at corners, and occasionally arrive defective. A standard 5% to 10% wastage allowance is mandatory for any professional build.
How to Use This Calculator
Whether you are building a small garden retaining wall or a massive two-story house extension, follow these precise steps:
- Step 1: Enter Wall Dimensions: Measure the total physical length and height of the planned wall in meters (m). If the wall has windows or doors, you will need to calculate the total gross area first, and mentally subtract the opening area before finalizing your order.
- Step 2: Enter Brick Size: Input the exact length and height of the individual bricks you are purchasing in millimeters (mm). Standard UK bricks are 215x65mm, while US Modular bricks are generally 194x57mm.
- Step 3: Set Mortar Thickness: Enter the planned thickness of the cement joints in millimeters. The global standard for structural masonry is a 10mm joint.
- Step 4: Set Wastage Percentage: Enter a waste buffer. We highly recommend a 5% buffer for straight walls, and a 10% buffer for complex walls with many corners or patterned brickwork.

First, we add the 10mm mortar to the brick dimensions, converting them to meters: 0.225m × 0.075m. This means each laid brick covers exactly 0.016875 m² of wall space. We divide our 20 m² wall by 0.016875, resulting in a base count of exactly 1,185 bricks. Finally, we add our 5% waste buffer (59 bricks). You must order exactly 1,244 bricks to safely complete this project.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Forgetting Double-Skin Walls
This calculator estimates a single-skin wall (half-brick thickness). If you are building a double-skin wall (full-brick thickness for load-bearing), you MUST double the final output quantity.
Ignoring Windows and Doors
You do not lay bricks where a window goes. Always calculate the total wall area, then mathematically subtract the square meter area of all doors and windows before calculating the brick count.
Skipping the Waste Buffer
Trying to save money by setting the Wastage Percentage to 0% is a fatal error. Bricks snap during cutting, and pallets frequently arrive with damaged corners. A 5% minimum buffer is non-negotiable.
Guessing Mortar Thickness
Entering a 0mm mortar thickness will drastically over-inflate the required brick count. The mortar physically separates the bricks, taking up valuable volume. Always enter the standard 10mm.
