Frequently Asked Questions – Curtain Measurements
Inside mount curtains are installed within the window frame for a clean, built-in look. Outside mount curtains are installed on the wall above and to the sides of the window frame, making the window appear larger and providing better light blockage.
Fullness refers to how much extra fabric is used relative to the window width. Standard fullness (1.5x) creates gentle folds, while fuller options (2-3x) create more luxurious, dense folds. Fuller curtains provide better light control and a richer appearance when closed.
For optimal appearance, hang rods 4-6 inches above the window frame. For ceilings 8 feet or higher, consider mounting closer to the ceiling (within 2-3 inches) to create the illusion of height. Always ensure consistent height across all windows in a room.
Curtain rods should extend 4-6 inches beyond the window frame on each side. This allows curtains to stack back completely off the window when open, maximizing natural light. For outside mount installations, this also helps make the window appear larger.
Curtains should either: 1) Just touch the floor (most common), 2) Float 1/2 inch above (easier cleaning), or 3) Puddle 2-4 inches on the floor (dramatic look). Avoid ending above the floor unless covering just the window. For sill-length curtains, end 1/2 inch below the sill.
