Frequently Asked Questions – Pregnancy Due Date
Due dates are estimates based on averages. Only about 5% of babies are born on their exact due date. Most arrive within 2 weeks before or after. First trimester ultrasound dating is the most accurate method, with ±5-7 days accuracy.
Gestational age counts pregnancy from the first day of your last period (about 2 weeks before conception). Fetal age counts from conception. Medical professionals use gestational age, which is typically 2 weeks more than fetal age.
Doctors may adjust due dates based on early ultrasound measurements, especially if they differ significantly from LMP-based calculations. Ultrasound in the first trimester is the most accurate way to date a pregnancy.
If you have irregular cycles or don’t know your LMP, use the conception date or ultrasound dating methods. Early ultrasound (before 13 weeks) provides the most accurate due date estimation in these cases.
