How Roof Square Footage Is Calculated

For a standard gable roof, this calculator treats the roof as two identical sloped rectangles. It first adds the two rake overhangs to the ridge length. It then adds the eave overhang to each half of the building width and uses the pitch to turn that horizontal run into a sloped rafter run.

Roof area = 2 × (building length + rake overhangs) × [half width + eave overhang] × √(1 + (pitch ÷ 12)²)

A roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface. The calculator divides the order area, including your selected allowance, by 100 to estimate the number of squares.

Worked Gable Roof Example

Suppose a garage is 40 ft long by 30 ft wide, with 12-inch eave and rake overhangs, a 6:12 pitch, and a 10% allowance. The ridge length becomes 42 ft, and each roof plane has a horizontal run of 16 ft.

A 6:12 pitch has a slope factor of about 1.118, so each sloped run is about 17.89 ft. The two roof planes total about 1,503 sq ft before allowance. With 10% added, the order area is about 1,653 sq ft, or 16.53 roofing squares.
